Quality dance injury assessment is key to succesfull, healthy dance studios and companies. Evaluating injuries early benefits the dancer and the instructor. This can avoid a serious injury that requires the dancer to be out of a performance. Assessing injuries on-site at any studio or dance department can be included in workshop options.
The assessment begins with a history of the dancers previous injuries and a general observation of their anatomy to note any physical limitations that may be causing their injury. All factors associated with the injury such as flooring, shoes, length of warm-up, etc. will also be noted and important in determining the cause. Understanding the mechanism of the injury is important in the evaluation process. Analyzing the technique is included in the assessment. Attaining proper diagnosis through various strength and flexibility tests will start the process of how to better manage the injury. All of these, are important pieces that will be included in the assessment. Approximate healing time will be discussed and a personalized home exercise plan will be administered.
These assessments are important to the dancer and instructor. The dancer begins to understand the factors associated with their injuries, injury management and prevention. The instructors will also learn more movement re-education and technique analysis. Take one afternoon devoted to injury prevention and care for your dancers.
