Workshop: Cross-Training & Conditioning

As instructors, are you concerned that your dancers will get out of shape on their summer lay off? As a dancer, are you not sure what to do for the summer while your ballet school takes a break? Are you worried about getting in shape before going to a summer intensive program?

Year-round conditioning specific to dance is important in the injury prevention process, as well as dancer health education. Training is defined as a process of repetitive, progressive exercise or work involving the learning process to benefit strength and flexibility. Repeating the same movements or exercises over and over can make you very good at a particular activity, which is usually a key goal of dancers. However, it also can keep you from moving beyond a certain level of conditioning and cause injury from overworking the same muscles. By working different muscles, cross training helps you avoid injury and reach new levels of fitness.

In cross-training, two or more types of exercise are performed in one workout or used alternately in successive workouts. It adds variety to the training regime, thus keeping training in the off-season more interesting, and may help your muscles adapt more easily to new activities.

In this workshop, cross training ideas specific to benefit dancers will be presented, including discussion in the areas of cardiovascular, flexibility, and strength training. The participant will learn how to benefit from using the treadmill, the elliptical, and/or a swimming program to increase their aerobic capacity and better their competitive performance capabilities. The participants will learn yoga exercises to maintain and increase flexibility, as well as Pilates exercises to increase strength and core stability.
