Workshop: A Better Arabesque

Dancers want to improve the look of their arabesque! They are full of questions on how to get the leg higher, how to hold it and how to decrease the discomfort in the low back. It is one of the most beautiful movements in dance and is the signature position for grace, strength and flexibility. Choreographers, audiences, judges and photographers love arabesque!

It focuses on low back injury prevention, arabesque muscle awareness, alignment and timing. All together this knowledge can produce a better arabesque. The workshop begins with a basic, age appropriate anatomy presentation on the spine, muscles of the abdominal area, and muscles of the hip and lower back. Dance Medicine Academic Seminars emphasizes the importance of understanding the action of the specific muscles needed to execute movement.

The participants will learn floor exercises specific for strengthening the core to reduce the risk of injury to the low back, as well as flexibility exercises for the upper back. They will learn exercises specific to arabesque execution, which will assist them in attaining more height. The students will break into small groups to analyze each other's technique. This is an excellent tool for breaking down movement and learning to focus on detail.

This is a popular workshop which provides interactive time for discussion and answers to all questions related to arabesque. The workshop includes all anatomy information, floor exercises and the barre combinations. It is an hour long, and allows time for discussion.
